Sacrifices, Challenges, & Opportunities

The decision to come back home for a break was not a choice I made lightly. It was only in packing up to go home, that I realized how much I had to sacrifice in order to do this project. This video takes a slightly sadder tone to reflect the kind of feelings I had as I landed in Hong Kong on my way back home (this was before the Tour de Nerdfighting).

Since I dont use donations to pay for my living expenses (or to buy the airplane tickets I needed to fly home), I’ve completely emptied out my life savings doing this project. My parents were dipping into their own savings to help me do this project but with the downturn in the economy, they dont have much savings themselves anymore.

The title for the video is a reference to some of the hurdles I had to face during this project. That includes the hospitalization of my mom (who originally came with me as a translator) due to Dengue Fever, the floods, the riots, the military curfew, the cyclone, the earthquake, the minor surgery I had, and now this recent problem I discovered about having iron poisoning/overload from drinking the metal-heavy water common in Bangladesh.

Is it better to lease or buy an aircraft?

if your into the hell of it(and you love aviation), get the plane
if you just want to be in a plane for flight months after a time., lease a aircraft.

Is there a tax advantage in two aircraft owners trading airplanes rather than purchasing?

Two private airplane owners want to swap airplanes rather than buying from each other. Is there a tax advantage to this?

If these are private vehicles and not business property, there is no tax advantage. Like kind exchanges apply only to business property.

The exchange would be considered a sale, and any gain would be recognized even if no cash was received. No loss could be deducted.

The proper way to buy an aircraft?

What is the proper way to purchase an aircraft.
Not concerning the aircraft being bought so much as Proper paying methods, should i take out a loan for one, Have it delivered versus getting it myself, and buying a place to stow it (aint suburbia grand?)

Do not purchase an airplane without the help of someone who knows how to properly assess its condition and go through the logbooks. It’s well worth the money to hire someone to do a thorough pre-buy inspection. Sometimes an owner will split the cost with you, or you can negotiate repairs or a reduction in price if any are required.

Do not purchase an airplane without conducting a title search first. The AOPA and other organizations provide this service for a reasonable fee.

If you have cash to buy an airplane outright it can be a good bargaining tool on price, but most people get loans. The AOPA, EAA, and other organizations can help you get financing and insurance. I highly suggest that you get pre-approved for both, and then have some ready cash for a small downpayment so the owner will hold the aircraft for you while the loan goes through. Get EVERYTHING in writing from the seller. I got my airplane loan and insurance through the AOPA and it was a very easy and painless experience.

Whether you pick up the plane yourself or have it delivered is one of the things you might negotiate with the seller. You can also hire a third party to do it for a fee, but be sure they have insurance coverage. Also, before you buy, do your homework at local airports regarding rental of tie-down spaces (covered or open) or hangar space. The latter can be very pricey and waiting lists can be years long at some airports.
